Overview of Sessions

SESSION I

 

 

Change and Systems Thinking
Participants will study and analyze the concepts of Change and Systems Thinking within the context of district- and school-level reform aimed at significantly increasing student achievement.

SESSION I
Day 1

Participants will:

  • analyze the changing system of education using a labor-management approach by W. Patrick Dolan, author of Restructuring our Schools
  • compare and contrast a variety of education reform theories pertaining to systems change

SESSION I
Day 2

Participants will:

  • analyze the impact of globalization on our economic, political, social and educational systems
  • explore the factors that impact student achievement in a standards-based culture, using the Battelle For Kids’ Bridging the Gap map activity
  • plan and implement a series of one-on-one conversations with stakeholders in their school communities pertaining to issues impacting student achievement

SESSION I
Day 3

Participants will:

  • determine the relevance of Margaret Wheatley’s New Science Theories and Implications for Organizations within their own school system
  • begin to plan and implement a school leadership structure, grounded in best practices, to guide and support student achievement efforts in their schools
  • complete and analyze the Communications Style Inventory as a method to begin to establish an effective leadership team
  • examine the student achievement project overview/expectations developed by the Voinovich School
  • develop a communications plan for student achievement
  • actively participate in team planning meetings

SESSION II

Collaborative Culture and Leading Change
Participants will explore the elements of a collaborative culture that supports student achievement in schools and the role they must play in leading change within their schools and communities.

SESSION II
Day 4

Participants will:

  • begin to develop a vision for school improvement
  • describe the elements of a professional learning community within schools
  • explore effective ways of speaking with stakeholders on topics related to student achievement
  • determine how the 7 Norms of Collaborative Work relates to each leadership team
  • compare and contrast the Stages of Team Development within their own leadership teams
  • plan and implement effective meeting management strategies and guidelines
  • actively participate in team planning meetings

SESSION II
Day 5

 Participants will:

  • compare and contrast a variety of theories of change and determine how they impact their own school community
  • complete and analyze the data from the Team Effectiveness Critique
  • complete and analyze the data from the Thomas-Kilman Conflict Mode Instrument
  • identify strategies to manage difficult conversations
  • identify and demonstrate facilitation skills to manage conflict
  • determine decision-making parameters and methods to guide the work of the school leadership team
  • plan and prepare to implement the NEA KEYs online survey
  • actively participate in team planning meetings

SESSION III & IV

Data and Assessment
Participants will explore and evaluate data collection and analysis options for data-based decision-making to improve student achievement.  In addition, participants will interpret and critique student assessment data that can be used to guide teaching and learning.

SESSION III
Day 6

Participants will:

  • gain an understanding of basic data collection and analysis methods
  • learn how to use data in a timely, ongoing manner to influence classroom instruction
  • learn how to  use data to identify appropriate interventions for students
  • learn how to use data to track and monitor student progress

SESSION III
Day 7

Participants will:

  • build a school data profile using the critical study process
  • plan and implement the NEA KEYs on-line survey in their schools
  • actively participate in team planning meetings

SESSION IV
Day 8 & 9

Participants will:

  • gain an understanding of the value-added progress metric and how it impacts student achievement
  • explore what a year’s growth for students should look like after a year’s worth of instruction
  • compare and contrast student progress and student achievement
  • examine the impact of value-added data as part of Ohio’s accountability system
  • learn how to use a variety of data analysis methods and tools

 

SESSION V

Power Standards
Participants will be introduced to the Power Standards concepts as a practical process for identifying and teaching the standards that are most critical for student achievement.

SESSION V
Day 10 & 11

Participants will:

  • demonstrate proficiency in using existing data to determine challenges and opportunities in their schools K-12 mathematics program
  • create a K-12 mathematics curriculum map and pacing guide aligned to state standards that can be implemented in the participating schools
  • understand the concepts and develop the skills necessary to serve as “trainers of trainers” by providing leadership and support to the K-12 teachers in their local schools
  • determine the work of a professional learning community to improve student achievement
  • begin planning for school improvement projects
  • identify and analyze how resources are aligned to support student achievement
  • actively participate in team planning meetings

SESSION VI

 Student Achievement Project Proposal Development and Graduation
During the final session, district and school teams will have an opportunity to develop their student achievement project proposals and receive feedback from their fellow program participants and faculty.  Participants will have an opportunity to celebrate their efforts and achievements in building capacity for improved instructional practices this year.

SESSION VI
Day 12

Participants will:

  • review their efforts to build capacity for systemic change to support student achievement
  • present their student achievement project proposals for feedback
  • revise their project proposals with assistance from the training staff, faculty and consultants for the Ohio Appalachian Educators Institute
  • submit their team proposals for their student achievement projects to be implemented in year two of this initiative

SESSION VI
Day 13

Participants will:

  • identify and celebrate their efforts and accomplishments throughout this year
  • identify and review the work to be addressed in year two of this initiative
