About Us
The Ohio Appalachian Educators Institute (OAEI) provides district leaders, principals and teacher leaders the necessary skills to lead desired change at the district, school, and classroom level by building capacity for improved instructional practice. Closing the significant achievement gaps among students in disadvantaged Ohio Appalachian communities and their counterparts in other parts of Ohio requires a concerted effort by teachers and administrators.

The Ohio Appalachian Educators Institute (OAEI) is a comprehensive initiative to improve student achievement in the region by:
- supporting the development of effective leadership at all levels of the system;
- aiding the formation of dynamic learning communities that include teacher-leaders
and principals;
- facilitating more collaborative relationships between union presidents and district superintendents.
This collaborative venture includes the Ohio Department of Education, the National Education Association, Ohio Education Association and Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs. Initial funding was provided by the Ohio General Assembly for school districts in the 29-county region designated through federal legislation as Appalachia.
| Ohio Appalachian Educators Institute (OAEI) builds capacity in school districts in rural Ohio Appalachia by giving superintendents, principals and teacher leaders the skills to lead change. By providing high quality professional development which has not been available in the past due to geography, lack of technology and budget, the OAEI supports system change leading to improvements in student achievement. | ![]() |
